RLSS Open-Water Lifeguard Qualification

Is this course suitable for you?

No prior knowledge required for OWL course. However, candidates must be able to meet the following criteria:

• Be confident in open-water,
• Be able to swim continuously at least 400 metres in a pool or open-water on their front and showing urgency,
• Be able to submerge under the water confidently,
• Be able to dive to a depth of two metres.

OWL Qualification

The RLSS Open-Water Lifeguard Qualification is valid for two years. Candidates should re-qualify before the certificate expiry date to remain qualified.

To get qualified in OWL course, candidates must be 16 years of age at the date of assessment, show 100% attendance and complete all assessments.

Requalification for OWL

Candidates renewing their qualification must:

• Be considered prepared and ready for the assessment
• Complete the minimum training hours for a renewal candidate (12-hour course or ongoing training)
• Pass the assessments before their existing OWL qualification expires, including re-taking any failed sections.
• Meet the criteria and be assessed as a new candidate if their qualification expires.
