Manual handling means transporting or supporting a load by hand or bodily force. It includes lifting, putting down, pushing, pulling, carrying or moving loads which can be an object, person or animal. Employers must protect their workers from the risk of injury from hazardous manual handling in the workplace.
Manual handling causes over a third of all workplace injuries.
Manual handling risks can be found across all kinds of workplaces – farms, building sites, factories, offices, warehouses, hospitals – and they can occur almost anywhere in the workplace.
To help prevent injuries from manual handling, employers should provide information, training and instruction to their staff on how to recognise the hazard of manual handling and how to protect themselves.
