The First Aid at Work qualification meets the Health and Safety Executive’s requirements and the First Aid at Work regulations. It is suitable for businesses, schools and community groups to meet their legal obligations.

First Aid at Work (FAW) qualification is designed to meet the needs of employers, communities and individuals committed to providing safety and first aid support for aquatic and non-aquatic (dry) activities in a working or associated environment. This course provides candidates with the knowledge, skills and confidence to deal with the demands to administer first aid within the work environment.

Course Content

The FAW qualification will equip the first aider with skills to confidently undertake emergency first aid if someone becomes ill or injured at work and provide effective care for common workplace injuries, illnesses and emergency care.

Is this course suitable for you?

FAW course is recommended to everyone. Organisations are particularly advised to take this course. No prior first aid knowledge is required.

This qualification is for learners aged 16+ who have a specific responsibility at work, or in a voluntary capacity to provide first aid.

Employers’ Responsibilities

Under health and safety law, an employer has the responsibility to ensure that first-aid provision in the workplace is suitable and sufficient. This includes:

  • Carrying out a first aid of needs assessment to decide where, how many and what type of first aiders are needed
  • Providing training and re-qualification training for the first aiders
  • Providing sufficient first-aid kits and equipment for the workplace
  • Ensuring that all staff are aware of how and where to get first aid treatment

FAW Qualification

  • The Emergency First Aid at Work qualification is valid for three years.
  • No prior first-aid knowledge is required for this course
  • The minimum age for the course is 16 years of age on the date of the assessment.
  • Candidates must be physically able to perform resuscitation of a collapsed patient on the floor (training provided on the course)
  • Candidates must requalify before the expiry date of their existing qualification to remain qualified.

Requalification

First aiders must re-qualify every 3 years to maintain their First Aid at Work qualification.

The requalification course is a 12-hour (2-day) classroom course designed to refresh first aiders’ skills and knowledge.

Delivery Method

The First Aid at Work course is either a classroom or a blended learning course (part online and part classroom). The course includes both practical and theoretical course delivery.

Course Duration

The total contact (training) time for a First Aid at Work course is 18 hours, and 100% attendance is required.

Candidates have a choice of a 3-day classroom course or a blended course. Candidates attending the blended course will complete 6 hours of online learning prior to attending 2 days in the classroom.

Assessment

The First Aid at Work course has a continual assessment of the practical skills and a short multi-choice assessment of theory knowledge.
