Aquatic Therapy Pool Rescue Award

The ATPRA is a supervision and rescue qualification for therapists, teachers and support staff working on the poolside or in the water during activities, such as aquatic therapy, therapeutic exercise or sensory pool sessions.

The ATPRA qualification is suitable for those working in a range of swimming pools, including where the water is deeper than your standing depth.

Which award is right for you?

The award comes in two versions: ATPRA and ATPRA Light. So, which do you need for your Aquatic Therapy sessions?

You can find out by answering the following question:

Do you have lifeguards or first aiders who are available to respond quickly to a therapist or support worker in the event of an emergency?

  • If your answer is “Yes”, choose ATPRA Light.
  • If your answer is “No”, choose ATPRA.

If a candidate holds suitable first aid qualification, they can be granted 5 hours of recognised prior learning (RPL), enabling them to complete the ATPRA award in 1 day.

Candidate Requirements

Candidates must be able to:

  • Regain their feet from a face-down and face-up floating position
  • Surface dive to the deepest part of the pool
  • Climb out without help and without using steps or ladders

Learning Outcomes

ATPRA training provides candidates with the knowledge and practical training to:

  • Initiate an emergency response
  • Rescue a casualty in the event of being alerted to an emergency
  • Recover a casualty to poolside
  • Perform vital First Aid, including CPR and AED

ATPRA Qualification

To be qualified, candidates must be aged 16 years or older at the time of the assessment, show 100% attendance and complete all assessments.

Delivery Method

To provide the best support to candidates, the maximum number attending a course is limited to 12.

Course Duration

The total qualification time for ATPRA Light is 6 hours, excluding breaks.

The total qualification time for ATPRA Full is 12 hours, excluding breaks.

Assessment

To achieve the ATPRA certificate, candidates must pass a formal assessment at the end of the course, where trainees demonstrate the skills and knowledge learned in the form of a theory and practical assessment.

Emergency First Aid at Work

You can add EFAW to your ATSPRA qualification. The full 6-hour EFAW course and assessment must be completed to get qualified.

Automated External Defibrillator Programme

You can also add AED to your ATSPRA qualification when you include EFAW. The full 6-hour EFAW and 1.5-hour AED training must be completed (including assessments) to get qualified.
